I'm off

Opportunity came up, so I won't be around for a while. Like, not posting on the blog. So don't worry that I'm dead if I stop posting for a while.

  1. We'll be there as soon as we run some checks. Jenkins believes he found a way to get us limited access to the internet from the city. He'll come along with us and run some tests. - Lt. Com. Cartwright

    1. Sounds good, should give me time to get to the spot. What will I be permitted to do with any information I find there?

    2. I'm not the commander, but I'm assuming that you can do whatever you want with it.

    3. Better deal than I expected, thanks Sam (or would you prefer Lieutenant Commander Cartwright?)

    4. Either is fine. I just sign off with my formal title.

    5. So that you're not surprised, Lt. Cartwright, in the UK we say lieutenant like "leff-ten-ant" rather than "loo-ten-ant". Just in case that's how Lovett says it and you were standing there like "WTF is a leftenant?"

    6. I'm from the UK. I just deal with the way the others pronounce it.

    7. We're on our way now. All preparations are complete. Just a small word of advice, Carter is a bit touchy about the books that he's going through. Or, at least, he was.

  2. So how did your little visit turn out? I've heard rumors of Carter disappearing. Surprised no one's said anything yet.

    1. Profitable, tiring. Really needed a drink at the end; I don't think I'm cut out for the military life.

As for the rumours, you may want to check your sources, I haven't heard jack (pun unintended).

    2. They are very reliable. Word is he talked to you before running off. Interesting.

    3. Naturally, I can neither confirm or deny any such allegations. And I can't tell you what he said, either.

    4. Hmph. Ruin my fun. I was hoping that he'd finally lost it.

    5. Not that you're bitter about him killing you or anything

    6. Why would I be? I have a new host! It's a wonderful experience. I'd recommend it. If you were immortal that is.

    7. To be honest, immortality doesn't sound like my cup of tea. Rather live once and be done with it.

    8. Watching the human race advance.

    9. But surely at the risk of becoming disconnected from it. Seeing everything change, how does one continue to relate to people? Or have you heard that one before?

    10. Well, I, the entity that is immortal am not human. The body I inhabit is. And I have to get a new one every now and again. I find the memories and personalities of every new host very interesting.

    11. Shame that they end when you move in. Or do they?

      Delete
    12. Not completely. In a way, they never do. I still have the memories of every previous host. Including a few who had been temporary. In a few special cases we've worked out deals where we just share the body. Like a dormer into a house. I just sit there, provide knowledge and help. They provide me with a place to stay until I can find a more suitable host.

    13. It's rather complicated. You see, not all humans can handle having an immortal being inhabiting their body. For some, they 'burn out.' Sometimes slowly enough to be useful, sometimes lasting only seconds. And there are a few who can survive and even live after I leave. Although, that isn't very common.

      Delete
    14. And 'dorming' doesn't burn them out?

      Delete
    15. Nothing gets past you, eh? In many cases, yes, it does. Albeit at such a slow rate that they can live a pretty much normal life afterwards.

    16. I have the feeling this is a bad question, but I'll bite. Side effects?

    17. Well, the brain gets used to my presence, so once I leave things get a bit weird. Insomnia, schizophrenia, hallucinations, etc. Nerves will sometimes go haywire and register 'phantom' pain and feelings. Get the idea?

      Delete
    18. Hang about. Are you saying you're a specific signal that can pass from brain to brain?

      Delete
    19. Sorry. I tend to oversimplify things I don't understand, no offense meant.

      Delete
    20. Ah, none taken. It takes quite a bit to offend me.

    21. It's good to be laid back about that sort of thing.

So, how're things going on your end of things?

      Delete
    22. Things on my end of things are surprising well compared to many of you runners.

    23. Wish I could say the same thing over here. Trying to find Linux is like banging my head on a brick wall.

Guess I can't complain though. Compared to most runners things are pretty good.

    25. Hang in there Linux. I'll get you out.

Can you tell me how long you've been on the boat?

      Delete
    26. I'm afraid Linux has lost computer privileges. Stop looking for him. He'll be happy at some point. You'll just keep him from that joy.

      Delete
    27. Yeah, because telling me to stop looking always works do well.
